Of the 77 horses loaded onto ambulances, 54 – or 70% – were either subsequently confirmed dead or have simply disappeared.

Although not reported as vanned off, these 9, too, have not resurfaced:

Equibase reported 2 horses as “euthanized”:

…and 14 as “broke down,” all of whom either later confirmed dead or vanished:

Giant Indian, Feb 26, Laurel 7
Sea Rep Run, Feb 28, Charles Town 6

Allowing that a few of the vanned may have been “retired”/rescued, I think it reasonable that some 75 horses – almost 3/day – were killed in February 2014. But remember, that’s in-competition, Thoroughbreds/QuarterHorses only – this report does not include harness and training deaths. And there were surely other euthanasias not reflected here – horses merely “pulled up” or “eased,” even some who, per Equibase, finished their races without incident. In short, without question, more than 24 racehorses are dying on American tracks each week.

(If any of the above are alive, their current people – whether racing, rescue, or private – should disclose; if done, I will dutifully report.)

  1. Thank you Patrick, I am so grateful and appreciative that you value the lives of these beautiful creatures enough to tirelessly keep track and remember each one. I do not believe that there is anyone in the horse racing world who truly cares enough to do the same. Please don’t ever stop.

  2. Malibu Affair, a 5 year old gelding, 17 starts for 85K in earnings. This gelding ran for trainer Dallas Keen on August 11, 2013 where he was “washy at the gate” and “gave way”, coming in 11th/last place…then again for Keen on August 31 where he again came in last, this time in a ten horse field. In November, he was with a new trainer…on 11-25, he ran in a 30K AOC…and in his next race on January 7, 2014, he was dropped into a 10K claiming race and was claimed. On February 8, he fell/DNF. CONFIRMED WITH KEEN PER MARY JOHNSON ON 2-12-14…MALIBU AFFAIR SUFFERED A BROKEN LEG AND WAS EUTHANIZED. Of course, that wasn’t mentioned in the chart. Deception once again, keeping the dead horses out of the public’s “sight”.

Tyme Champ was rescued by Mary Johnson and I. Mind you, after many phone calls trying to ascertain the condition of the 4 y/o gelding, I finally spoke with Greg Veit, Ohio’s racing commissioner. Veit was quick to get back with me with “good news”…Tyme Champ was going to a “rescue” and this was facilitated by his “good friend”, racing trainer T.R. Haehn (whose name he not only couldn’t spell for me, he also mispronounced it…his “good friend”). After my phone call to Haehn, I discovered Tyme Champ was NOT going to a rescue but instead, was being picked up be a dealer (this dealer has had several warnings posted about her shady dealings, one confirmed of horses she sold to slaughter). Tyme Champ is forever safe, but at only 4-years-old, not sound. His diagnostics are still ongoing.

    • Lying is a way of life in this subculture. Thank you, Joy and Mary, for the rescue of Tyme Champ. He would have, more than likely, ended his short stressful life in the slaughterhouse. What a sport !!

  3. It’s a cruel event at every horserace. I read a report, somewhere else, that excitement is stirring about the new 2 yr olds for the fall races. How exciting, more young horses to add to the death list. So cruel that greed outweights concern and interest in the health and wellbeing of these innocent beautiful animals. Wish they all were shut down. Although racetrack boards claim concern, even implies efforts to improve their tracks still does not solve the problem of racehorses dying on their tracks. Still, avoiding the answer to prevent these tragedies from continuing. So sad and sick.
