Somekindasexy Makes it 20 Dead for Saratoga ’17; 11-Year-Old Killed at Finger Lakes – in His 118th Race

The NYRA train may have moved on to Belmont, but racehorses are still training at Saratoga Race Course – and dying. The NYS Gaming Commission has just disclosed the death of 3-year-old Somekindasexy on Monday: “pulled up after breezing, splint applied, ambulanced off; fx both RF sesamoids – euthanized.”

That’s 20 dead horses for Saratoga ’17:

Lakalas, May 28, “collapsed and died after breezing”

That Mr. P, August 26, “being treated for acute colic…without resolution – euthanized”
Aggie’s Honor, August 31, “suffered a fracture to right front leg breezing – euthanized”
Somekindasexy, September 18, “fractured both RF sesamoids – euthanized”

Also, the Gaming Commission tells us that Legal Tendora was killed in the 4th yesterday at Finger Lakes. The chart says Legal was merely “pulled up quickly and vanned off”; in truth, he was euthanized where he lay – on the track. Now this: Legal Tendora was 11 years old and this was his 118th time under the whip. 11, 118. Take a moment to contemplate that. What’s more, every single one of those races, save for his very first eight years ago, was of the claiming variety; prior to dying yesterday, Legal was going for just $3,500. Perhaps even more shocking, all 118 races, all of them, were at Finger Lakes Racetrack (much of the time every two weeks – or less). And as far as I can tell, all came under a single trainer – Edward Babcock. To which I ask, how do you sleep, sir (and Finger Lakes officials)? How do you sleep?

    • I just looked up a 10 yo gelding named Bell Zone. This horse just ran THREE races in 5 days! And the latest one was an allowance race with a $1,950 purse at some rickety back woods track named Blackfoot. This is horrible desperation on the owner/ trainer’s part at the expense of this poor gelding!

      • This is one form of abuse that goes on all the time at these low level and not so low level tracks.

Why does this cruelty happen? It happens and flourishes because the commissions and every body in the business as well as the bettors do nothing to stop it or even protest it.
This is irrefutable proof that racing does not give a damn about the horse.

When I spoke to the Stewart at Gulfstream concerning Jill’s Reflection’s 51 starts at 3yrs. I was informed racing leaves such decisions up to the “trainers/abusers”

My question to all in this business: why is this allowed when time and time again horses are horribly overworked.
In a civilized society there ares laws to prevent the unscrupulous from preying on others including animal cruelty laws. But when it comes to the racehorse business it operates outside the law and the laws of human decency.

Not even one basic rule in place to protect the horse says all one needs to know about this “business”.

  1. VILE, egregious, repulsive, and heartbreaking.
I absolutely DETEST anybody who participates and/or supports these egregious, inhumane acts on racehorses.
You apologists are NOT GOOD, you are all mentally deranged with a sadistic twist in there.
You make me sick, and anybody in the real world can see you for what you are: a bunch of animal abusers!!
I hope every single racetrack dies in the dirt just like all the racehorses you have murdered.
This poor racehorse LEGAL TENDORA – my heart aches when I think about the horrific life he led for this scum bag owner/trainer, but the racing commissions, the people who watched this go on every day in the stable area, the people who bet – you are all accessories/enablers of this blatant racehorse abuse.
Finger Lakes is a HELL HOLE for racehorses, but aren’t they all.
Shame on Governor Cuomo who continues to pour MILLIONS of dollars to keep these money pits, and cruelty circus going.
Finger Lakes would have shut down if Gov. Cuomo hadn’t reversed his decision.
All I can say is VOTE for politicians who commit to STOP funding these hell holes.

  2. You know Patrick, maybe we all should start highlighting the suicides, involving gambling on horse races.Maybe that will have a much greater impact on this sordid industry and finally turn the public completely off to it.

  3. Cruelty charges should brought against Babcock.
Where are the animal welfare organizations ? More specifically, the American Humane Society. That organization is going along with racing, working to improve the treatment of the horse !!!
I do not see any evidence of of this.

All I can do is discontinue my monthly donations which is not that much. However, I will encourage as many as I can to do the same.
Money is the only thing that matters anymore.
