Another Kill at Mahoning; Finger Lakes Also

From Equibase’s account of the 8th yesterday at Mahoning: “GRANITES PEAK was pulled up in distress at the top of the stretch and was euthanized.” ‘Tis the second kill (that we know of) at this Ohio track in the past three days. Granites Peak was three.

In the 7th at Finger Lakes Tuesday, Ronnie’s Whey was reported as “in distress, vanned off.” In fact, the horse is dead. In fact, says the NYS Gaming Commission, the horse was euthanized right there on the track. This was the 7-year-old’s 55th race. In his two most recent, last; five races back, last – almost 30 lengths in the rear.

This is horseracing.

  1. As long as this industry exists, the killing will continue. Please share this site with everyone you know who attends a race, who patronizes a racino, who goes to OTB, who watches the Triple Crown or the Breeders’ Cup. If we stop the betting we can bring this industry down! Thank you all for your support.

  2. Sadly – this latest death was just the 4th racing day into the new season at Mahoning racecourse. They are off to a horrible start..

    • Darlene, the majority of racehorses are what the industry calls “cheap claimers” and they are not insured. But when the purses are inflated by casino/racino money, most often, horses first through last get a check…so why not run a horse who is plagued by chronic injuries or is “non-competitive” when his/her owner and trainer are guaranteed something. Standing in a stall they have no chance of earning anything – racing, they do.

  3. So so sad how these horses are used and abused. I volunteer st s horses rescue Ranch and see how these mskrsyiv horses can hardly walk because of blown out knees or bad arthritis. Very cruel!!
