  1. It seems it wasn’t always like this. As owners got greedier and trainers started using drugs on horses, the carnage increased. When owners and the insurance industry formed their unholy alliance, more deaths were sanctioned. Work for laws to prevent people from recouping their investment money. Only then will horses be protected.

    • Racing is contracting as we speak. Since 2000, the U.S. industry has suffered a net loss of 34 tracks; all other metrics – racedays, races, field sizes, “foal crop,” and, yes, attendance and handle – are also trending one way – ours. We are winning. We need only to press on.

  2. Horses run. But…they are meant to run in the open fields. Without a whip on their backs. Without being drugged and slammed against a rail because of the pack that is also drugged with illegal drugs running along with them. Jockeys call these horses athletes. Olympic athletes are drug tested. The same with the Tour de France bicycle race. The human race is failing them. Where is the respect for these beautiful creatures. We have to stand up for them. Indifference is the worst crime. The barns behind the race tracks look just like the dark streets of a hood. Any drug is available.
